Good sports team up for new coaching series. Olympic cycling gold medallist Sara Carrigan OAM is one of three highly credentialled sporting identities lending their expertise to new coaching videos produced by Griffith University.
A Griffith Ambassador, Carrigan has joined Brett Green (Level 5 Athletics Australia throw coach) and Helen Thompson-Coleman (My Athletix indoor athletics coach) for Griffith’s Sports Coaching Leadership and Pedagogy Videos Series 2.
Launched this week by the School of Education and Professional Studies, the Series 2 videos feature prominently in two Masters courses – 7223EDN/EPS723 Sports Coaching Pedagogy and 7224EDN/EPS724 Leadership for Sports Coaches – offered internally through Griffith’s Master of Education program and globally through Open Universities Australia in the Master of Sports Coaching.
Editor and producer Dr Sue Whatman (Senior Lecturer in Health, Physical Education and Sports Coaching) said this series extended the repertoire of custom-made videos and focused more intently upon Sports Coaching Pedagogy.
“The three profiled coaches represent the enormous local coaching talent that we have on the Gold Coast,” Dr Whatman said.
“Through these videos, their knowledge and expertise is available to aspiring and experienced coaches through online course modules that allow for learning at any time, in any time zone and anywhere in the world.
“The coaches progress students through weekly topics, helping them refine their own ideas, philosophies and practices around holistic and reflective coaching.
“Topics include meeting athletes’ needs, tailoring specific programs, technology use, effective questioning, reflective practices and developing coaching philosophies.”
The videos were made possible by OUA Course Development funding secured through Griffith’s Office of the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic) and overseen by the Deputy Chair of Griffith’s Academic Committee, Associate Professor Wendy Loughlin.
The launch was held at the Gold Coast campus and was attended by a select group of coaches, physical education teachers and Griffith staff.
The videos are available to the public through the School of Education and Professional Studies’ YouTube channel at: www.youtube.com/user/griffitheps.
